BSEE Guidelines for Decommissioning state that  “3,700 active oil and gas platforms are under its jurisdiction, 40 percent of which are over 25 years old and likely to require decommissioning soon”.

This leaves approximately 60% of the platforms which will be nearing the end of production over the coming years and decades and may be suitable for future repurposing and help solve the ever increasing demand for power - estimated at 30% by 2050
